American Beautyberry
American Beautyberry
Callicarpa americana
If you’ve spent much time wandering around in quality whitetail habitat in the Southeast, you have undoubtedly seen American Beautyberry. This beautiful shrub thrives on the edges of swamps, moist hillsides, fence rows and flat lowlands. It will tolerate heavy browsing from deer. Growing 4-5’ tall, and equally as wide, American Beautyberry puts on clusters of small, purple berries in the fall. The fruit is favored by many bird species, including Bobwhite Quail.
Beautyberry has become an increasingly popular ornamental and is used primarily in partially shaded areas of landscapes. One of the most attractive attributes to homeowners is that it produces a chemical called callicarpenol, which may act as an insect repellent around your yard.
Soil Requirements: Typically found in moist, but well drained soils. Will do well in partial shade.
Zone: 7-9
We are now accepting orders for Fall 2024. Please select a ship date between August 1 and December 31.
