Native Warm Season Grasses (Pack of 5 plugs)
Native Warm Season Grasses are a critical component of the North American ecosystem and provide habitat that many of our indigenous game species require. Planting NWSG’s has become an increasingly popular and effective habitat management practice for restoring native plant communities.
Re-establishment of NWSG’s on a large scale is usually conducted using seed. However, we are offering native grass plugs for our customers that desire quicker results on smaller projects. Our NWSG plugs can be used on a wide array of projects from addressing erosion control issues to hiding your favorite deer stand on the edge of a food plot.
We have used our grass plugs to create areas on the edges of our food plots that will readily conceal a ground-blind or provide a cozy spot to stay concealed when sitting on the ground during turkey season. We have also used them to establish concealment on a travel route to a hunting stand to avoid deer spotting you as you enter/exit.
Big Bluestem- Andropogon gerardii
Height: 5’-8’
Commonly found as a dominant native grass in the Longleaf Ecosystem as well as the central prairies of the United States. Big Bluestem can flourish in relatively infertile soils. Well-drained clay loam and sandy loam, as well as many moist soils,
Indiangrass- Sorghastrum nutans
Height: 3’-7’
A common warm season grass is Central and Eastern US. Indiangrass will thrive on a range of well-drained soils from clay to sand. Will also tolerate moist soils. Serves as an important component in critical habitat for Bobwhite Quail reproduction.
Switchgrass- Panicum virgatum
Height: 3-5’
Native to nearly the entire United States, switchgrass is adapted to a wide range of sites and soils. Not adapted to some heavy soils. Due to it’s wide range of adaptation, switchgrass has been frequently used in restoration projects to stabilize soils on strip mines, logging decks, sand dunes and dikes. It is also a tried and true species for establishing wind breaks in crop fields.
Seeds from switchgrass are consumed by game birds such as pheasants, turkeys, quail and doves. Switchgrass is likely the most common species of NWSG used to establish bedding cover for whitetails.
