Native Pecan

(Carya illinoinensis)

The native pecan differs from the more popular grafted cultivars in that native pecan has a thicker shell and smaller nut. While they are harder to crack, the extra work is worth it as native pecan is highly valued for its richer flavor when compared to commercially produced varieties. Although it shouldn’t be considered as a preferred forage species of Whitetails, the native pecan is readily consumed by a wide range of wildlife species.
