The pin oak is known for its distinctive branching pattern, where the lower branches point downward while the upper branches reach upward, giving it a pin-like appearance. The tree typically reaches heights of 60-70 feet, with a narrow, pyramidal shape. It has deeply lobed, glossy green leaves that turn a vibrant red or bronze color in the fall. The pin oak is a popular landscaping tree due to its fast growth, tolerance to urban environments, and ability to adapt to various soil types. Acorns are dropped in the fall and readily consumed by deer, turkeys and waterfowl.
