Butterfly milkweed, also known as Asclepias tuberosa, is a vibrant flowering perennial plant native to North America. It is a member of the milkweed family and is particularly beloved by butterflies. The plant grows to a height of one to two feet and features clusters of bright orange flowers from late spring to early fall. The flowers are rich in nectar and are a reliable source of food for a variety of pollinators, especially butterflies. The plant has narrow, lance-shaped leaves and distinctive seed pods that split open to release numerous flat, brown seeds attached to silky hairs that allow them to be carried by the wind. Butterfly milkweed is also well-suited to dry, sandy habitats and is often found in meadows, prairies, and open fields. Its striking appearance, ability to attract butterflies, and low maintenance requirements make it a popular choice for gardens and landscaping projects aimed at supporting pollinators.
