The live oak is another selection that I believe is vastly underrated. We consistently find acorn production in our live oaks around age 5, with very significant crops before age 10. Live oaks are usually dropping during the peak of hunting season, October-December.

While the live oak does well on a wide range of soil types, it is a clear choice for sandier soils that do not support many other oak species well. Deer and turkeys readily gobble up the acorns.

Zones: 7-10
Soil Types: well drained soils, does well on poorer, sandier sites
